This flag is officially called Nisshōki but is more commonly known in Japan as Hinomaru (日の丸, the "circle of the sun").

Numerous Yokaren-trained pilots carried out the kamikaze attacks on American invasion forces . Many more recruits were still in training preparing to crash into the expected American fleet preparing to invade the Home Islands when Japan surrendered. About 80% of the graduates of the Yokaren program died in the Pacific War.
