Japanese Bronze Archer with Gilt Decoration — Signed Kōseki

£1,000.00

Japan, probably Meiji period (1868–1912)

A moment held before the arrow is released.

This Japanese bronze okimono depicts a warrior drawing his bow, his extended arm balanced by the backward lean of his body. The sweeping bow and widely planted feet give the figure a strong, purposeful silhouette.

Warm brown patination contrasts with gilt decoration across the robes: bamboo sprays, circular motifs and stylised bird roundels. The face, textured headgear, tied cords and sword fittings reward closer inspection, while the decoration continues around the reverse.

The robe bears a signature read as Kōseki (晃石); the maker’s identity remains unconfirmed. Presented on a carved wooden stand.
