Object: Eboshi-nari kabuto (samurai helmet)

Materials and construction: Iron, constructed in three principal sections, with dark lacquered finish. The form is designed to resemble an eboshi, the traditional Japanese court cap. The lower section of the shikoro incorporates gold-coloured decoration.

Catalogue note: Eboshi-nari kabuto form part of the broader tradition of kawari kabuto, in which armourers produced helmets of distinctive and sculptural form. This example has a strong vertical profile and retains evidence of age and use.

Condition: The helmet shows age-related wear. Two areas have previously been interpreted as possible sword-strike marks; this interpretation has not been independently verified and they are therefore recorded here as features requiring further examination.
