Object: Japanese fukuro-yari (socketed spear) with long pole and associated mountings

Nagaye: Approximately 2,650 mm long, according to the existing Yamazakura catalogue record.

Mountings: The spear retains the long nagaye and koshirae with which it was acquired in Japan. The existing catalogue also records mother-of-pearl decoration to an inome (boar's-eye) motif on the mounting.

Catalogue note: Fukuro-yari differ structurally from the more familiar tang-mounted yari: the base of the spearhead forms a socket that fits over the pole. The survival of this example with its exceptionally long pole and associated fittings gives it particular interest as a substantially complete mounted polearm.

Research status: Blade dimensions, socket construction, period, surface condition, exact materials and decoration of the mountings, and any inscriptions or marks are to be documented during physical recataloguing.
