Materials and decoration: Black lacquer with gold maki-e decoration depicting a bird on a branch, with gilt-metal fittings to the lid and legs.

Accessories: Retains its tying cords and original storage box according to the existing Yamazakura catalogue record.

Catalogue note: Hōkai are elevated, lidded containers associated with the storage and presentation of garments and other valued objects. The combination of black lacquer, gold maki-e and metal fittings gives this example a strong architectural and decorative presence.

Condition: The previous catalogue records the piece as being in very good condition. A detailed assessment of the lacquer surface, maki-e, fittings, cords and storage box will be made during physical recataloguing.

Research status: Period, dimensions, construction, maki-e technique, metal composition, any inscriptions or marks, and the age and relationship of the storage box remain to be documented.
