Object: Japanese yari (spear) with nagaye

Overall length: Approximately 2.4 metres, according to the existing Yamazakura catalogue record.

Mounting: The nagaye is decorated with carved floral and butterfly motifs. The opposite face bears cursive Japanese script.

Dating: The previous catalogue attributed the blade to the Muromachi period on the basis of the form and length of the kerakubi (neck). That dating has not yet been independently re-established during the current recataloguing and is therefore treated as a provisional attribution pending physical examination.

Inscription: The earlier catalogue interpreted the cursive inscription as expressing the idea that through training the practitioner and weapon become one. A fresh transcription and translation are required before that interpretation is presented as definitive.

Catalogue note: The survival of the long decorated and inscribed pole gives this yari particular interest as a complete mounted object rather than as a blade alone.

Research status: Blade measurements, nakago, mei if present, exact construction, period, full pole dimensions, inscription and condition are to be recorded during physical recataloguing.
