£100.00
Folio. (9) 213 (1)pp., 170 plates. Original red cloth with gilt lettering and illustration on spine, in illustrated dustjacket, black lettering on spine. Burgundy endpapers. Color frontispiece. "Affectionately known by everyone in any way connected with Japanese art as the "Red Cross" Catalogue, this was an astonishing book to appear in 1915 at the height of the war, conceived and executed as it was with the sort of lavish unconcern for time and cost that had been squandered on, say, the huge Tomkinson Catalogue in happier times. But the exhibition that gave rise to it, though intended as a fund-raising exploit, was both imaginative and purposeful, and deserved a catalogue that was more than a simple list of exhibits." (Publisher). Exceptional collection of color and b/w reproductions of Japanese art and handicraft with list of contributors and descriptive catalog. Dustjacket with light wear, binding with light wear along edges, some age-toning of block not affecting imagery. Brief inscription in upper right corner of front free endpaper. DJ, binding and interior in overall good+ to very good condition. Color plates near fine.
